This year on Diwali, The Quint decided to do something different. Away from the din of crackers, Chinese lights, and festive shopping, it decided to spread the light in quarters that often remain dim-lit, calling it #SpreadTheLight.
In a dilapidated 5-bedroom house in Burrari area of north Delhi, Dashraj Gyawali, a visually impaired government school principal, houses 60 visually impaired women.
The government has started many institutions and hostels for the men, but nothing for women.Gyawali
He knew that expecting the establishment to help the visually impaired women would likely be futile. He instead took it upon himself and set up a working women’s hostel for the visually impaired in his house.
Since the hostel is self-funded, it is more often than not looking for donation — in cash and kind. I helped them with a few week’s groceries but it isn’t enough.
You too can step forward and #SpreadtheLight in these girls’ lives and make their education, work, and festivals more productive.
You can get in touch with Neetu, the head warden to understand how to help them: +91 9868096652, 011-27614143.
Also take The Quint’s #SpreadTheLight challenge and exhort three of your friends too. All you have to do is upload your videos and photographs on Facebook and twitter or write in to spreadthelight@thequint.com . Don’t forget to tag The Quint.
