Another year goes by and the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi continue to produce gems on the football field. And it’s not only them, Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil also showed their class in 2016.
At present, Chelsea are going to celebrate Christmas like no other team as they are leading the Premier League by six points. Liverpool stands at second place with 37 points.
And in La Liga, Real Madrid lead defending champions Barcelona by three points.
As we move on to 2017, The Quint takes a look at the top seven goals scored in the year.
1. Mesut Ozil’s Goal vs Ludogorets Razgrad
Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil, who has had a hot and cold season in the Premier League so far, produced one of his finest performances in the Champions League match against Ludogorets Razgrad in November.
The Gunners had managed to turn a 0-2 deficit to 2-2 by the 41st minute, but thereafter the match seemed to be heading to a draw.
However, in the 87th minute, Ozil chipped the ball over the keeper, beat two defenders and found the winner for his team with absolute ease.
2. Lionel Messi’s Goal vs Osasuna
Barcelona’s Lionel Messi scored a goal in his typical style in the La Liga match against Osasuna in December. Barca, who were already leading 2-0 in the match, wrapped up the game with a score of 3-0 in stoppage time.
Messi ran with the ball into the opposition’s penalty area then found the gap between four defenders and the goalkeeper to score a goal.
3. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Free-Kick vs Sporting Lisbon
Cristiano Ronaldo is the kind of the player who will keep reminding us about the phrase ‘Cometh the hour, cometh the man’. When Real Madrid were down 0-1 in the Champions League match against Ronaldo’s former club, Sporting Lisbon, Ronaldo carried out a perfect free-kick in the 89th minute.
When one is taking a free-kick, he only wants to see the ball to hit the top corner of the goal... and Ronaldo hit the nail on the head yet again in a high-pressure situation.
Eventually, Real Madrid won the game 2-1.
4. Jordan Henderson’s Perfect Strike vs Chelsea
Liverpool’s star player Jordan Henderson scored one of the best goals of the year, when he took a shot from 25 yards and found the top corner against Chelsea. The home team’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had no chance to save the strike.
The Reds, who were already leading 1-0 made it 2-0 at a venue, where they took all three points last year as well.
Finally, Liverpool won the match 2-1 and it was Antonio Conte’s first loss as Chelsea manager.
5. Xherdan Shaqiri’s Bicycle Kick vs Poland
Can there be a list of top goals without a bicycle kick? Impossible!
Switzerland were down 1-0 in the round of 16 match against Poland in the European Championship and were almost out of the tournament until Xherdan Shaqiri produced one of the greatest goals ever scored in the history of football.
Shaqiri saw the ball pop up in front of him in the penalty area and he just owned the moment with a superb bicycle kick.
Although, Switzerland lost the match 5-4 on penalties.
6. Dimitri Payet’s Solo Goal vs Middlesbrough
West Ham United’s Dimitri Payet showed the whole world how to score a solo goal in the Premier League match against Middlesbrough in October.
Payet recieved the ball in the left flank when they were 1-0 down. After going past Antonio Barragan, Payet just refused to look around for any of his teammates and focussed on scoring the goal.
The 29-year-old beat four defenders and found the back of the net.
Eventually the match was drawn 1-1 and West Ham finally left the pitch unbeaten in a league match after four consecutive games.
7. Kekana’s Shot From His Own Half vs Cameroon
South Africa's Hlompho Kekana lit up the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers tournament with a wonder strike from his own half into Cameroon’s goal.
Kekana recieved the ball in the 50th minute and beat the defence line and the goalkeeper with the fantastic strike.
The goal helped South Africa go up 2-1, however Nicolas N'Koulou found the equaliser for Cameroon later and the match ended with a scoreline of 2-2.
