Gary Kasparov became the youngest player to win the World Chess Championship at the age of 22 on November 9, 1985. He defeated the then-champion Anatoly Karpov.

The record was earlier held by Mikhail Tal for over 20 years. From 1985 to his retirement in 2005, Kasparov was ranked world number one for 225 out of 228 months.

Kasparov, who is arguably the greatest Chess player of all time also holds the record of the most consecutive professional tournament victories (15) and Chess Oscars (11).
