Swapnil Gugale and Ankit Bawne broke a 70-year-old record with their unbeaten 594-run partnership in the Ranji trophy on Friday. The Maharashtrian pair broke the long-standing record of 577 set by Vijay Hazare and Gul Mohammed in the 1946-47 at the Wankhede Stadium in a match against Delhi.

Bawne, who came in to bat at number four and Maharashtra skipper and opener Swapnil Gugale together scored a total of 577, which is also the second highest partnership in all first class cricket, behind only Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene’s 624 in a Test match against South Africa.

Gugale and Bawne surpassed the 580 that Rafatullah Mohmand and Aamer Sajjad made for WAPDA against Sui Southern Gas Corporation in Pakistan's domestic cricket.

Gugale and Bawne’s unbeaten scores of 351 and 258 when they declared at 635/2, were the cricketers’ career-best scores. Gugale’s previous best was 174 while Bawne’s was 172.
