Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli and his actor-producer wife Anushka Sharma turn heads whenever they go. Be it at a cricket match or, apparently, a coffee shop in Finland!
On American chat show ‘In Depth with Graham Bensinger’, Virat opened up about the first time he met Anushka and the joke he cracked in all his nervousness. The skipper also talked about how Anushka planned their entire wedding and recounts an encounter with a fan at a coffee shop during their honeymoon in Finland.
How They Met
Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma famously met for the first time while shooting a shampoo commercial in 2013. It is a fact that has been acknowledged by both. However, what went down when they were introduced for the first time? What did Anushka say? How did Virat behave?
To start, the Indian skipper says he was “nervous” when informed by his manager that he would be shooting with Anushka for the commercial.
“I said, ‘how the hell am I going to be in a frame with a professional actor? I am going to look like a fool’. Then he told me I’d be fine and that the script was all fun and games. First time I met her, I cracked a joke immediately with her. I was very nervous and that’s why I cracked the joke, because I didn’t know what to do.”
Meeting a Namesake in Finland
During the interview, Virat also revealed that the couple broke the news of their wedding to their friends just two months before the big day.
It was, in fact, Anushka who planned their wedding in Italy since he was in the middle of a cricket series. However, there was an incident from their honeymoon that Virat recounted to Bensinger that seems to have made the newlyweds realise how much their life had changed.
“We went for our honeymoon to Finland, hoping to see the Northern Lights but we couldn’t because it was snowing for all three days. But we were just fascinated and taken aback by the whole place – it was pure, white and snowy all over. We were like, ‘wow, this place is stunning’. We went to a coffee shop one day, it was so cold and we went to the place and I was thinking, ‘This is one place from India where we haven’t seen anyone yet and this is amazing’ and suddenly I look around and in the corner of the coffee shop there is a guy in a turban. I quickly looked away, got my coffee was was trying to hide from him but he came to our table and said, ‘Good to see you guys, my last name is also Kohli’. I remember thinking, when are we going to go to a place where we don’t get noticed?”
