India opener Prithvi Shaw was slapped with an eight-month ban from all forms of competitive cricket on Tuesday, 30 July, for failing a dope test, the BCCI said.

While some cricket enthusiasts and Shaw fans expressed shock and disappointment at his doping violation, others slammed the cricketer, raising a word of caution to all sportsmen.

The 19-year-old, who has played two Test matches against the West Indies in 2018, was reportedly undergoing rehabilitation for a hip injury. He tested positive for terbutaline during the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament.

A Twitter user said, “A valuable time in his Test career is being missed out,” adding that the cricketer could have easily cemented his place as a permanent Test opener.

Another user said, his suspension is an example of a “competitive environment where time is of essence and careers fade away in no time!”

‘8 Months Harsh for a Silly Mistake’

A few others expressed their disappointment at the ban, saying an eight-month ban was uncalled for a “silly mistake.”

Shaw's period of suspension is eight months, starting from 16 March to 15 November, effectively ruling him out of India's home series against Bangladesh and South Africa.

“So India’s next golden boy fails a drugs test in February this year. They wait until July to charge him. Then apply back-dating rules such that he can play again this November. Why did it take 5 months to charge him,” another Twitter user questioned.

Along with Shaw, two other domestic players – Akshay Dullarwar of Vidarbha and Divya Gajraj of Rajasthan – have also violated the cricket board's anti-doping code.
