Andre Russell helped Kolkata Knight Riders win their campaign opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday (March 24).

With 58 needed of the last three overs, Russell started his power hitting as he took 18 runs of Siddhart Kaul of the 18th over of the innings followed by 21-run over from SRH skipper Bhuvneshwar Kumar. With 13 needed of the final over, Shubman Gill hit two sixes off the final over to win Kolkata the game.

After the game KKR owner, Shahrukh Khan through a tweet thanked his team members for showing a fighting spirit in the contest, while having a special mention for matchwinner Russell. He said that Russell was nearly in tears and wanted to cry after taking his team to a win.

Kolkata was hit early by a counter attacking knock from David Warner who scored 85 in his comeback game for Sunrisers. He added a 118-run opening stand for the first wicket with Jonny Bairstow and gave a solid base to their innings. Vijay Shankar then scored a quickfire 40 to propel Sunrisers to 181.

Kolkata had the worst possible start to their chase of 182. They lost Chris Lynn for just 7 in the second over. Nitish Rana held one end up as he scored 68 off 47 balls before being dismissed in the 15th over.

Andre Russell then took centerstage as he did what he does best. He blasted the bowlers to all parts of the ground and turned the match on its head. The fans at Eden Gardens were treated to some delightful strokes from the blade of Russell who ensured Kolkata had a winning start to their campaign.

Kolkata after winning their first game will now host Kings XI Punjab on Wednesday (March 27).
