After a horrifying day 9, India began its day 10 at Rio with some happy news as Srikanth Kidambi just managed to sneak past his Danish opponent Jan O Jorgensen and book a berth in the quarterfinals.

The world No 11 overcame his world No 5 opponent 21-19, 21-19 in a hard fought match.

2. Srabani Nanda Eliminated From Women’s 200m

Indian athlete Srabani Nanda failed to qualify for the semifinals of the women’s 200 metres after finishing 55th among 72 athletes in Round 1 at the Rio Olympics on Monday.

Srabani clocked 23.58 seconds at the Olympic Stadium, way below topper Cote d’Ivoire’s Marie-Josee Talou (22.31 seconds).

3. Ranjith Maheshwari Eliminated in Men’s Tripple Jump

Renjith Maheshwary finished a disappointing 30th to crash out of the qualification round men’s triple jump at the Rio Olympics on Monday.

Competing in his second Olympics, Maheshwary found himself at the 11th spot in the qualifiers, after an effort of 15.80 metres in his first attempt, which was way short of the qualification mark.

4. Khatri Bows Out of Men’s 85 kg Greco-Roman Wrestling

India’s Ravinder Khatri lost to Hungary’s Viktor Lorincz by technical superiority in men’s Greco-Roman 85kg pre-quarterfinals on Monday.

The 24-year-old Indian failed to provide any resistance during a 0-9 loss to the World Championship bronze medallist. Wrestling rules state that if a point gap of 8 or more is established between a grappler and the opponent, the leading contestant wins the bout by technical superiority.

5. Lalita Babar Fails to Bag a Medal in 3000m Steeplechase

Lalita Babar’s Rio campaign ended after she finished 10th in the 3000m steeplechase final. Lalita finished the race in 9:22.74 seconds, 22 seconds behind the gold medal winner Ruth Jebet of Bahrain.

6. PV Sindhu Marches Into Quarters, Faces World Number 2 Next

India’s campaign in women’s singles badminton has been kept alive by PV Sindhu’s resounding show of domination against Tai Tzu-ying of Chinese Taipei in the round of 16.

Playing late on Monday night, the Indian shuttler didn’t let up much throughout the match against the world number 8 as she closed out the game with a 21-13, 21-15 scoreline.

7. Boxer Vikas Krishan Yadav Eliminated One Win Short of a Medal

Former Asian Games gold-medallist Vikas Krishan (75kg) took a pounding from second seed Bektemir Melikuziev in the quarterfinals to bow out of the Rio Olympics, ending India’s boxing challenge without a medal for the first time in eight years.

With Shiva Thapa (56kg) and Manoj Kumar (64kg) already out of contention, Vikas’ loss on Monday drew the curtains on the Indian boxing challenge at the Games.
