Cricketing Fraternity Pays Tribute to Bob Willis

Wishes for Bob Willis have poured in from all corners of the world after the news of his passing.

Bob Willis had bowled England to a dramatic Test win against Australia in the Third Test of the Ashes in 1981. He passed away aged 70, on 4 December.

In his illustrious career, Willis played in 90 Tests, taking 325 wickets. He also served as captain for England before retiring in 1984. He then became a pundit on Sky Sports.

Willis had been diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago and had begun to deteriorate in health over the past two months.

People from all over the world have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the legendary English paceman.

Former cricketers like Glenn McGrath, Brian Lara and Kumar Sangakkara paid their respects to Willis on Twitter.

“Such sad news. Bob was an English legend, inspired a generation of fast bowlers around the world & was a good bloke. RIP mate

“A remarkable human being.“ Bob, you were truly one of the greats of this beautiful game. R.I.P.

“RIP Bob Willis. Tragic passing of one of the greats of English cricket, fearless broadcaster and gentle soul.”

Current English paceman Stuart Broad also took to Twitter to honour Willis.

“Gutted to hear the news of Bob Willis passing. A lovely person with a great humour who was so proud of England cricket. Legend. “

Multiple cricketing bodies also tweeted about the legendary bowler’s passing.

“Cricket has lost a dear friend.”

“We're very sad to hear of the passing of MCC Honorary Life Member, Bob Willis.

A Lord's legend & former England captain whose name is on the Honours Boards three times.

Our thoughts are with his friends and family.”

“All at Surrey County Cricket Club are devastated to learn of the passing of former Surrey and England bowler Bob Willis. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time,” tweeted Surrey Cricket from their official handle.

“Extending our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of Bob Willis. Bob was a hugely-respected cricketer and captain and was well-liked by Kiwis. To lose someone of his standing is an extremely sad occurrence – not only for @englandcricket but the global cricket family.”

BCCI President and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly took to Twitter to express his condolences.

“So sad at the news of bob Willis .. may his soul rest in peace .. love to his entire family @bcci @SkyCricket @nassercricket .. india Will miss a stalwart ..”

Indian cricket analyst and commentator Harsha Bhogle tweeted: “The cricket world will mourn the death of Bob Willis; top cricketer, straight talking analyst on @SkyCricket.

Australian broadcaster Jarrod Kimber honoured Willis’s iconic bowling performance in The Ashes in 1981.

“Bob Willis bowling. The rest was noise”

English football legend and now Sky Sports broadcaster Gary Lineker also tweeted about Willis’s passing.

“Saddened to hear that Bob Willis has died. One of our greatest fast bowlers. Met him on many occasions and he was always great company with a sense of humour that was as sharp as his bowling.
