Lovlina, Sonia, Simranjit Assured of Medal in Women’s World Boxing

Lovlina Borgohain (69kg), Sonia Chahal (57kg) & Simranjit Kaur (64kg) were assured of a medal at the Women’s World Boxing Championships after they won their quarter-final bout on Wednesday in New Delhi.

Lovlina beat Australia’s Kaye Frances Scott 5-0 in the quarter-final while Sonia put up a spirited fight against Colombia's Yeni Castenada to win the bout 4-1 and book a berth at the semis.

In another enthralling contest of the day, rising star Simranjeet put up a dominant show to go past Ireland’s Amy Sara and book her a place in the semis with a split 3-1 win.

Earlier, veteran boxer MC Mary Kom booked a spot in the semi-finals after beating China's Wu Yu 5-0 in the light flyweight (48 kg) category.

With this victory, the 35-year-old has assured herself of a seventh World Championship medal. Mary will take on North Korea's Kim Hyang Mi on Thursday.

In the 54kg category, Manisha Maun crashed out in the quarter-final after losing 1-4 to top seed Stoyka Zhelyazkova Petrova of Bulgaria.

In the 81kg category, Bhagyabati Kachari fought a close bout against Jessica Sinisterra of Colombia, but eventually bowed out in the quarter-final after losing 2-3.

Meanwhile, Manisha Maun (54kg), Pinki Rani (51kg) and Kachari Bhagyabati (81kg) bowed out from the championships after their quarter-final loss on Tuesday.

Manisha went down against top-seed Bulgarian Stoyka Zhelyazkova Petrova 1-4 in her quarter-final bout. Despite a good start from Manisha, the Bulgarian pulled her way back in third round.

Bhagyabati lost a thrilling 81kg quarter-final bout against Colombia's Jessica Sinisterra. by a split decision 2-3.

Pinki Rani lost by a unanimous verdict of 5-0 to North Korea's Chol Mi Pang in the 51kg category.
