CWG: Defending Champion Sathish Sivalingam Retains Gold With Ease

Defending CWG champion Sathish Kumar Sivalingam has won a gold in the 77 kg weightlifting men’s category.

Day 3 of the 2018 Commonwealth Games started with yet another gold medal from the weightlifting arena.

Defending CWG champion Sathish Kumar Sivalingam has managed to retain his crown with a total lift of 317 kgs in the 77 kg men’s category.

Sathish’s dominance was such that he did not even attempt his third lift in the clean and jerk round, winning it with his second attempt of 173 kgs. His winning margin was a massive 5 kgs.

The snatch round however saw Sathish face tough competition from England’s Jack Oliver. The two kept upping the weights before their attempts but Oliver managed to keep his nose ahead at the end of snatch as he lifted 145kg in his second attempt. It was a kilogram more than Satish's final attempt.

However, Satish eventually came out on top after Oliver failed two attempts of 171kg in clean and jerk and settled for a total of 312kg (145kg+167kg).

Defending CWG champion Sathish Kumar Sivalingam has won a gold in the 77 kg weightlifting men’s category.

The bronze medal went to Australian showman Francois Etoundi, who lifted 305kg (136kg+169kg). Etoundi injured his shoulder after his final lift.

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Sathish won the gold medal with 149kg snatch and 179 kg clean and jerk lifts, totalling 328kg. His lift of 149kg in snatch continues to be the Games record.
