Weightlifter Sanjita Chanu clinched India’s second gold medal at Commonwealth Games 2018 after finishing with a total lift of 192 kg in the 53 kg category.
The Manipuri girl set the Commonwealth Games record with a lift of 84 kg in the snatch round and then followed it up with a 108 kg lift in the clean and jerk round.
The diminutive Manipuri claimed the gold ahead of Paupa New Guinea's Loa Dika Toua, who finished with 182kg (80kg+102kg) for a silver. The bronze medal went to Canada's Rachel-LeBlanc-Bazinet (81kg+100kg).
Chanu surpassed India’s Swarti Singh’s record of 83 kg, which was set during the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Weightlifters Mirabai Chanu and Gururaja sparkled to deliver a gold and a silver, respectively, for India on the opening day of the 21st edition of the Commonwealth Games on Thursday.
Mirabai, the reigning world champion, delivered a power-packed performance in the women's 48 kg category, leaving the competition far behind by setting Games and Commonwealth records in the snatch, clean and jerk as well as the total.
The Manipuri powerhouse registered 86 kg in snatch and 110 kg in clean and jerk for a total of 196 kg. Such was her dominance that she set a record in each of her six lifts in the competition.
In the men's 56 kg category, Gururaja had a best attempt of 111 kg in snatch and 138 kg in clean and jerk for a total of 249 kg to bag the silver medal.
