The World Cup began on Valentine’s Day with 14 teams. Each tryst had its own charm. There were upsets and disappointments, glorious victories and bitter defeats.

But the time for the underdogs is done. The cream has risen to the top. Four teams, three matches and we will know who can claim to be the best one-day side in the world.

Since betting is illegal in India, we know none of you have any money riding on the semis. But here are the odds anyway... for... ahem... ‘academic interest.’

All the figures for the semi-finals are from Ladbrokes, London.

New Zealand vs South Africa (Even)

Tuesday, March 24 at Eden Park, Auckland

That’s right, not even the folks at Ladbrokes are willing to stick their necks out for this one. There are no odds, both sides are evenly matched.

You may think that New Zealand is going into the game with an advantage. After all, it’s a home game. And they have double centurion Martin Guptill, who is clearly on a roll not to mention the tournament’s highest wicket taker Trent Boult.

But South Africa aren’t exactly lacking in talent and form. Ab De Villiers is delivering and spinner Imran Tahir can take the game away.

Let’s just hope South Africa don’t live up to their reputation as chokers.

Australia vs India (4/9)

Thursday, March 26 at Sydney Cricket Ground

India has defeated every single team they have faced in this world cup. Our batsmen have been dominant and the bowlers have finished off every opponent.

But it doesn’t seem to be enough for the folks at Ladbrokes. For every 4 dollars/rupees/ponds you bet on Australia, you get 9 back.

Maybe it’s the home ground advantage, or the thrashing the Australians handed us this summer that has the bookies giving them a better chance.

Whatever it is, let’s hope Team India defies the odds.
