Even as India has started getting used to celebrating the feats of Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu quite regularly, a young boy by the name of Siril Verma has conquered a new frontier.
A runner-up at the World Junior championships, Siril, just 16, is now the number one ranked junior badminton player in the world.
A student of India’s premier badminton coach Pullela Gopichand, Siril made a massive jump in rankings in the last one week, jumping ahead from his 12th ranking on the 31st of December.
There is however even better news, accompanying Chirag in the top 3 of the junior rankings is another Indian Chirag Sen who is now the new world number 3.
Verma is currently playing the Premier Badminton League in India as part of the Hyderabad Hunters team where he shares the dressing room with Parupalli Kashyap and Lee Chong Wei.
