Opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has decided to financially support 1998 Asian Games gold medallist boxer Dingko Singh for his medical treatment.

The boxer has been recovering from a live-saving operation after being diagnosed with liver cancer. Seventy percent of the Dingko’s liver was removed in an operation that was conducted in January.

Struggling to pay for his expensive medical treatment, Dingko’s family sold their Imphal house.

We have already spent Rs 10 lakh so far and are really worried how we will manage the money for treatment. We definitely need help.

The Sports Ministry provided financial support to the boxer only after his situation was made public by the media. And Dingko started getting treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.

However a few days later, the boxer and his family moved back to Imphal because of the rising costs of living and treatment.

After Gautam Gambhir learnt about Dingko’s situation, he offered financial assistance to the boxer.

He also posted a tweet asking everyone to help Dingko Singh.

India’s star boxer Vijender Singh too said that he was shocked to hear about the state of Dingko’s life.

To hear about Dingko was really shocking. He is a hero and a rockstar. I know him and he inspired me to become a boxer.
