World number one Novak Djokovic beat Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-4 to clinch his third consecutive Miami Open crown.

The Siberian, who didn’t drop a set at Miami, broke Nishikori in four of his first five service games to seize command. Nishikori on the other hand made 30 unforced errors against just 10 winners as he suffered his sixth consecutive loss in meetings with Djokovic.

Nishikori, 26, was in only his second career ATP Masters final, after Madrid in 2014, while Djokovic was in his 11th consecutive such final, improving his record in that run to 56-2

This win was also Djokovic’s 714th career win, moving him to 11th on the all-time list, one more than his coach, German six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker. He also equalled Andre Agassi’s record of sixth career victory in Miami as he clinched his record 28th career ATP Masters title, one better than the old mark he shared with Spain’s Rafael Nadal.

It was my best performance of the tournament. It came at the right time against a great player. I’m grateful and proud of all the achievements. To put myself in a position to have the records and be in the history books is a great accomplishment. Hopefully, I can make many more records.

With this win, he also surpassed Roger Federer as the highest earning player in ATP Tour History and bettered Rafael Nadal’s record of most ATP Masters titles by taking his tally to 28.
