Indian skipper Virat Kohli became only the second batsman to score 40 centuries in One-day International cricket after Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli achieved he feat on Tuesday in the second ODI against Australia in Nagpur. Tendulkar continues to top the list with 49 centuries.
This was Kohli’s seventh hundred against the Aussies and his second against the same opponent in 2019. Again, Sachin Tendulkar has scored the most number of centuries in India-Australia ODIs. He leads the list with nine hundreds. Rohit Sharma and Kohli are tied on the second spot with seven hundreds each. This was also Kohli’s fourth ODI hundred against Australia in India, drawing level with Tendulkar.
With this century, Kohli brought up his fifth hundred in the last 12 months. Tuesday’s century came-off 120 balls and included 10 boundaries. Out of Kohli’s 40th centuries, 24 of them have come while chasing.
Meanwhile, after 224 ODIs Kohli is ahead of Tendulkar by leaps and bounds. Apart from 40 centuries, Kohli has amassed 10686 runs at an average of 60.03 in 224 ODIs whereas Tendulkar had scored 8350 runs at an average of 42.60, including 23 hundreds.
Like everytime, Twitter was overflowing with tributes for King Kohli.
Earlier in the day, Kohli came out to bat after Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck in the first over of the match with India yet open their scoring. The Indian skipper then collaborated with fellow Delhi cricketer Shikhar Dhawan to add 38 runs and then added 37 runs for the third wicket with Ambati Rayudu.
However, it was his partnership with Vijay Shankar that really helped steady India’s innings as the two batted together for over 12 overs and took the total from 75/3 to 156/4.
