India’s South African tour failed to get off to a great start after the side slumped to a 72-run defeat.

The hosts, after a batting collapse in the first session on day four, set a target of 208 runs for India to go one up in the series. But the South African bowlers did enough to deny the Indians a victory. The visitors were bowled out for 135 runs in 42.4 overs.

Bowlers from both sides did a splendid job. Vernon Philander was the pick among the bowlers and ended up taking 9 wickets for 75 runs in the match. In the second innings, he picked up his career best figure of 6/42.

For India all their pacers justified their selection and ended up taking 17 wickets among themselves. Debutante Jasprit Bumrah was impressive. He took 6 wickets in the match, including three wickets in the second innings.

Apart from Hardik Pandya’s 95-ball 93 in the first innings, India had nothing to cheer about as far as their batting was concerned.

South Africa lead the 3-match series 1-0. Both teams will now travel to Centurion where the second Test will be played from 13 January.

Let’s see how the Twitterati reacted to India’s loss.

While people took to Twitter to question the Indian team selection and heap praise on Philander and the Indian bowlers, many users decided to see the lighter side of it.
