Mumbai batsman Prithvi Shaw has been picked to lead India’s Under-19 team at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2018. The All-India Junior Selection Committee on Sunday, 3 December, announced the 16-member squad for the tournament that will be held in New Zealand from 13 January to 3 February.

Earlier this year, a 17-year-old Shaw smashed a century on his Ranji Trophy debut match. He then followed it up with five centuries in seven first-class matches.

In September, debutant Shaw became the youngest cricketer to score a century in the final match of Duleep Trophy. With that, he also set a record of scoring a century in both his Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy debuts – a feat only held by Sachin Tendulkar, before the Mumbai batsman.

India are the joint-most successful team in the history of the tournament, with Australia having won the title thrice. In the last edition of the tournament in 2016 held in Bangladesh, India lost in the final against West Indies.

Ahead of the tournament, the Under-19 squad will be participating in a preparatory camp in Bengaluru from 8-22 December 2017. However, Mumbai's Shaw and Bengal's Porel have been permitted to join their respective Ranji Trophy sides for the quarter-final stage and will join the camp on 12 December.
