Kuldeep & Chahal’s Series by Series Highlights from September 2017
Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have become India’s bowling stalwarts in the limited-overs format over the last seven months. The two wrist spinners have done a splendid job during the middle overs, not only restricting the run flow, but also picking up handy wickets.
Chahal and Kuldeep have taken 13 wickets in the two ODIs against South Africa, helping India to win by six and nine wickets. The duo forged their partnership in 2017. Chahal took 21 wickets at an average of 28.57 and the chinaman took 22 wickets at an average of 24.77 last year.
The wrist spinners have successfully taken Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja out of the equation, when it comes to selection in limited-overs cricket.
Here’s a look at the highlights from Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav’s performance series by series, since Australia travelled to India in September last year.
Series vs Australia
The ODI series against Australia in September last year was the first series in which the spin duo contributed to a victory. Kuldeep and Chahal picked up 13 wickets in the first three ODIs, helping India to seal the five-match ODI series.
In the first ODI in Chennai, Australia’s target was reduced to 164 runs from 21 overs due to a rain delay. It was a target within range, given how modern-day cricket is played nowadays.
However, Kuldeep and Chahal had other ideas. The wrist spinners bowled in tandem from the 10th to the 14th over. Australia managed to score 39 runs and lost 2 wickets in those 5 overs.
In the second ODI in Kolkata, while defending a tricky total of 252 runs, Kuldeep and Chahal picked up half the side for just 88 runs. The chinaman took a hat-trick during the innings, which reduced Australia to 148/8.
Series vs Sri Lanka
In the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, Chahal and Kuldeep bowled together in only one match of the series – third ODI in Visakhapatnam. They picked up six wickets at a remarkable economy rate of 4.40.
They decimated the top and middle order, picking up the wickets of Upul Tharanga, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Angelo Mathews and Niroshan Dickwella. The chinaman ended up with figures of 3/42 and Chahal returned with 3/46, helping India to bowl out Sri Lanka for 215 runs.
Series vs South Africa
The spin duo started the tour of South Africa in grand fashion, picking up the half the side in the first ODI.
In Durban, Chahal and Kuldeep bowled in tandem from the 15th over till the end of the 22nd over. The Proteas managed to score just 26 runs and lost 2 wickets in 8 overs.
In the ODI in Cenurion, the wrist spinners created more havoc, taking 8 wickets for 42 runs. In fact, the duo took three wickets in the space of six deliveries. First, Chahal dismissed Quinton de Kock in the last ball of the 13th over. Then Kuldeep sent Aiden Markram and David Miller packing in the next over.
