Pacer Jasprit Bumrah picked up his maiden hat-trick in Test cricket on the second day of the second Test against the West Indies in Jamaica on Saturday, 31 August.

In the process, he became the third Indian bowler to claim a hat-trick in Test cricket after Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan.

Bumrah achieved the feat in his fourth over to reduce the hosts to 13/4. His hat-trick included the wickets of Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks and Roston Chase.

At the end of the day, Bumrah finished with 6/16 in 9.1 overs to leave the West Indies reeling at 87/7 in their first innings in reply to India’s 416.

Bumrah, who picked up 5/7 in the second innings of the first Test, looked ominous once again right from the start. In his third over he dismissed opener John Campbell after he was given a change of end.

But the carnage began in his third over.

In the second ball of the over, he dismissed Darren Bravo, who edged the moving ball to KL Rahul in the slip.

Next to go was Sharmah Brooks, who was declared LBW. Brooks went for a review but the decision remained unchanged.

To complete his hat-trick, Bumrah caught Roston Chase right in front of the stumps with another inswinging delivery. At first it looked like the batsman had hit it but it was on the insistence of skipper Virat Kohli a review was taken, who believed that instead of the ball, Chase had hit the pad with his bat. As it turned out, the skipper was right and with no bat involved, Bumrah etched his name in the record books.

After the hat-trick, Bumrah also sent opener Kraigg Brathwaite back to the pavilion to complete his back-to-back five wicket hauls. He finished with dismissal of Windies skipper Jason Holder.

Bumrah, who made his Test debut last year in January in South Africa, had become the fastest Indian pacer to 50 Test wickets in the first Test of the two-match series against the West Indies. He reached the milestone in 11 Test matches.
