In 2004, the state government allotted 59 bighas of land to the Assam State Association. The then Congress Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi had kept the first stone for this stadium, but for the next three years, no work was done for the stadium.

There were many illegal occupations around the stadium, after which, once again in 2007, Tarun Gogoi laid the foundation stone of this stadium. After that, the stadium hosted four matches in the 2013-14 Ranji season.

Difficulties Faced in Hosting an International Match

Despite the good results in the Ranji season, this grand stadium had to wait a long time to host its first international match. On several occasions, the Assam Cricket Association had lost hope of an international match on the field.

The Assam Cricket Association was accused of misusing the money granted to make the stadium. The BCCI investigated the cricket association as well.

Thereafter, during the tenure of Shashank Manohar in 2015, the state's cricket association had a huge cash crunch. During the time, even the BCCI was not able to help due to their tussle with the Lodha panel.

After the orders of the Lodha panel, the money was stopped from the BCCI side and stadium work stopped for some time. Tired of everything, the state association took a loan of Rs 6 crores from banks and completed the stadium work. Even now, the Assam Cricket Association has not been able to pay the loan.

Special Facilities in the Stadium

This stadium has a capacity of 37,500 people. Apart from this, there is a very good drainage system in the stadium to deal with rain during the match. There are indoor practice pitches in the stadium, as well as facilities like swimming pool and a gym. The members of the Assam Cricket Association believe that it’s their Eden Gardens.
