The Harley riding Lok Sabha Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan who had proposed a bill against lavish expenditure at weddings, reportedly had a lush wedding herself which involves a chartered plane.

Ranjeet who is married to MP Pappu Yadav had a royal wedding with over 1 lakh guests and chefs from different places, Jansatta reported. The MP and her family arrived from Jalandhar to Purnea in a chartered plane for her wedding, which took place in 1994.

Quoting Santosh Yadav, the Deputy Mayor of Purnea Developmental authority, Jansatta reported the wedding arrangements were spread over 200 acres of land and even had hundreds of elephants and horses.

All that being said, the grand scale of Ranjeet’s wedding contradicts the proposal she put forth in the parliament. While presenting the Bill in the Lok Sabha she was quoted as saying:

Great importance should be assigned to the solemnisation of marriage between two individuals. But unfortunately, these days a tendency of celebrating marriages with pomp and show and spending lavishly growing in the country. These days, marriages are more about showing off your wealth and as a result, poor families are under tremendous social pressure to spend more. This is needed to be checked as it is not good for society at large.

Going forward with that view, she had suggested that a limit of Rs 5 lakhs be put on the expenditure to check the “show of wealth”.

If a family spends above Rs 5 lakh on a wedding, it has to contribute 10 per cent of the amount on marriages of girls from poor families, Ranjan had said.
