In February 2024, when Umar Khalid withdrew his bail application before the Supreme Court, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing on his behalf, had said the decision was taken due to "change in circumstances". Overall, his first bail application had been rejected twice by the lower courts – and adjourned 10 times in 2023 and three times in January 2024.
The bail application, which was rejected by the Karkardooma court on 28 May, was his second bail application.
