The Supreme Court’s recent hearings on the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 have exposed the cracks in the design, and the intent of a law believed to be resting on constitutionally shaky ground.
Evident in the first two days of the proceedings, the bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, alongside Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan, appeared visibly unconvinced by the government’s justification of the amendments, and rightly so.
