BJP candidate 71-year-old Ramnath Kovind is set to win the presidential election on 17 July, considered a lucky day for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it being his birth number. The strategy of Modi and Amit Shah – propping up a Dalit candidate for the high constitutional post to isolate the Congress, to divide the Opposition and torpedo their proposed “Grand Alliance” ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha polls – appears to have partly succeeded with secular parties such as JDU, BJD, AIADMK, TRS and YSR(Congress) backing the NDA candidate.
