The first few days of Donald Trump’s return to power have brought tremendous shockwaves to the LGBTQ+ community globally as they watch the flurry of executive orders being implemented with growing concern.
Though these orders primarily affect LGBTQ+ individuals in the US, their impact stretches far beyond the borders, given the American queer culture has long shaped international narratives and policies.
Amidst the targeting of LGBTQ+ and other marginalised groups, Meta is under fire for an aberrant shift in policies favouring conservatives. The social media giant that once played a crucial role in upholding the queer community together during landmark campaigns such as #BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo, and #TransIsBeautiful, is now being decried for brazenly siding with the government.
Soon after Trump's re-election, Meta embarked on a slew on revisions to their diversity policies.
Meta Backflips: A Quick Recap
November (2024): Meta quietly began to remove LGBTQ+ themes on Messenger, filters, and pronoun fields from Facebook and Instagram following Trump’s victory.
December (2024): Meta officially ended its fact-checking partnerships, which it previously used to tackle misinformation about the LGBTQ+ community and other marginalised groups. It has adapted a community-driven moderation system similar to X.
January (2025): A week before Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, Meta removed tampons from men’s restrooms across its offices in the US. The directive reversed its previous policy aimed at supporting transgender individuals with gender-inclusive restroom supplies.
January (2025): Meta delivered a final blow by revoking its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives that supported marginalised groups, including transgender individuals.
January (2025): Meta revised its content-moderation policies, leaving marginalised groups more vulnerable to targeted online attacks. As a result of the revised policies, LGBTQ+ individuals can now be labelled as ‘mentally disturbed’ and ‘abnormal.’
Why Trads Hate Diversity
Before heading to the executive orders that caused major setbacks to the LGBTQ community, let's first understand what DEI is and why it is so crucial to the LGBTQ community.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are workplace policies designed to combat discrimination and foster support for marginalised groups, including LGBTQ+ individuals.
DEI initiatives were highly endorsed by corporate giants during the nationwide protests that erupted following the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020.
Conservatives have long opposed DEI initiatives, arguing that they discriminate against white individuals. Thus, conservatives have often used the media and courts to challenge these programmes. In 2023, following lawsuits filed by conservative groups, the Supreme Court ruled that considering race as a factor in university admissions is unconstitutional.
Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, played a vital role in fuelling the animosity towards DEI with a social media post: “DEI is just another word for racism. Shame on anyone who uses it.” Meanwhile, Trump, being an eloquent critic of DEI, during his presidential campaign added “a definite anti-white feeling in this country.”
With his first executive order, Trump revoked DEI initiatives, programmes, and offices within the federal government. Citing them as “ending radical and wasteful government DEI programmes and preferencing”, Trump overturned the executive orders by Biden that were aimed at promoting DEI initiatives and sent all the employees working at DEI offices on paid leaves with immediate effect.
In a separate executive order signed by Trump, the White House targeted the “critical and influential institutions of American society,” accusing them of “dangerous, demeaning, and immoral race and sex-based preferences under the guise of so-called ‘diversity, equity and inclusion.’”
It includes the major corporations, financial institutions, the medical industry, large commercial airlines, law enforcement agencies, and institutions of higher education.
Villainising Pro-Diversity Corporate Advocacy
Although DEI initiatives remain legal, companies choosing to implement them may have to walk on eggshells. Overstepping the boundaries of equal treatment may meet with investigation and potential litigation by federal agencies. Like Meta, several other big names voluntarily revoked their DEI practices, including Amazon, Walmart, and McDonald's, before Trump brought about the order.
Google, as the latest addition to the list, has announced scrapping of its diversity-based hiring targets. Citing the executive order by Trump, Google has at last abandoned its goal of having marginalised groups comprise at least 30 percent of its leadership force by 2025. While Google reviews the fate of its ongoing DEI programmes, more companies are expected to follow amidst the rising attacks on DEI initiatives.
After limiting LGBTQ+ protections in both federal agencies and workplaces, Trump turned to the medical sector, restricting federally funded access to gender-affirming care for minors. According to the order, titled “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,” the federal government will no longer “fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support” minors’ transition-related care. It includes surgery, hormone therapy, and puberty blockers.
End of the Rainbow?
Another executive order, the ‘One Flag Policy,’ prohibits the display of all ‘non-US flags’ at government buildings, including the Pride flag. On top of it, Trump has also challenged the legal recognition of LGBTQ+ individuals with a new executive order. It declares that the federal government will only recognise two genders, i.e., male and female, leaving the non-binary individuals in a quagmire.
Previously, non-binary individuals could mark ‘X’ or ‘Other’ as their gender on federal identification documents such as passports.
Under Trump’s new order, federal documents will now recognise only “male” and “female,” and all official records must replace the term “gender” with “sex,” reflecting the holder’s sex assigned at birth.
Turning to sports, Trump previously sparked controversy with his comments on two gold medalist athletes at the Paris Olympics 2024, as he pledged to "keep men out of women's sports." In the latest series of executive orders, Trump has barred transgender athletes from participating in female sports, casting a dark shadow over their future. "From now on, women’s sports will be only for women," he said, before signing the controversial executive order.
As Trump continues to roll back LGBTQ+ protections, queer organisations and civil rights groups have launched legal battles challenging these executive orders. At the grassroots level, queer activists are organising nationwide marches and social media campaigns using hashtags like #EqualityForAll and #StopTheRollback.
Several corporate giants, including Apple, have reaffirmed their commitment to DEI initiatives despite federal rollbacks.
