It was August of 2008; the world over, people were glued to television screens as the People’s Republic of China hosted Olympics games at a scale seen never before. Not just as a grand host, but the Chinese also won an astonishing 48 gold medals and a total of 100 medals that year. And even as the Olympics was coming to an end, the world knew that a new power had emerged, both in sports as well as in geopolitics.
The importance of sports in today’s age cannot be emphasised enough. Research has found that sports can have a therapeutic effect on many modern-day diseases and psychological disorders. Sport and physical activity can make a substantial contribution to the well-being of people in emerging economies like India.
