Jeff Bezos' net worth reached $105.1 billion on Monday, 8 January on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index as shares added to a 12-month surge that's lifted the online shopping giant's market value by almost 57 percent.

Bloomberg reported that Amazon’s shares rose by 6.6 percent in 2018 and the company captured 89 percent of the US holiday market, which kicked off the day after Thanksgiving.

With the latest push, Bezos crossed the all time high reached by Microsoft founder Bill Gates in 1999. The report added that Gates, 62, would have a net worth of over $150 billion if he held onto the assets that he has given away, largely to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bezos crossed the all time high reached by Microsoft founder Bill Gates in 1999.

The Amazon founder passed Gates, whose current worth is $93.3 billion, in November 2017, when Bezos’s fortune crossed $100 billion for the first time when the holiday shopping season kicked off on Black Friday.

The 53-year-old also controls space exploration business Blue Origin and American daily newspaper The Washington Post.

Since 1998, a year after Amazon went public, Bezos has been among the richest people in the world. He is the third American, including Gates and Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, to hold the coveted title of richest man in the world.

Other tycoons who featured on the list were Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, followed by Spanish retail mogul Amancio Ortega, best known for his chain of Zara clothing and accessories.

India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani is currently ranked 20th on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with the total net worth of $41.2 billion.
