The residents of Okanogan County in rural Washington were in for an albeit 'rude' surprise when they discovered their sunny Thursday skies maligned with the image of the male genitalia.

When the residents wrote to their local news channel about the obscene cloud hanging above their heads, a shamefaced US Navy took credit for the phallic imagery.

According to the Independent, officials at the Naval Air Station in the nearby Whidbey Island confirmed that it was one of their jets that was involved in the act.

A statement released by the US Navy read:

The Navy holds its aircrew to the highest standards and we find this absolutely unacceptable, of zero training value, and we are holding the crew accountable.

AFP reported the jet that was spotted skydrawing was a EA-18G Growler - an electronic warfare aircraft. The jet costs close to $67 million, according to a Navy fact sheet.

Many residents immediately took to social media to circulate photos off the drawing.

Speaking to The Spokesman-Review, a Ramon Duran said that he was running errands when noticed the drawing in the sky.

"It was pretty funny to see that. You don't expect to see something like that."
