In a move to curb the financing of terrorism in its state, the State Bank of Pakistan has directed all banks in the country to free accounts linked to leaders and office bearers of sectarian groups who are listed on the Fourth Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997, Dawn reported.
The accounts linked to 2,021 individuals amount of millions of rupees.
More than half of those listed are from Punjab, Sindh, Balochstan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad and Azad Kashmir.
This is the first time that the freezing of such a large number of accounts have been ordered in Pakistan.
Those who have been named on the list is suspected to have some “involvement in terrorism, or is an activist, office-bearer, or an associate of an organisation kept under observation under Section 11D or proscribed under Section 11B; and is part of an organisation or group suspected to be involved in terrorism or sectarianism”, the Dawn reported.
