A man lost a leg after he reportedly stepped on explosive material in New York’s Central Park on Sunday, reports claim.
The explosion, suspected to have been caused by a firework accident, created a momentary frenzy before a wrapper was found at the site.
The victim was identified as Connor Golden, an 18-year-old from Fairfax Virginia, who was visiting New York from Washington for a holiday, according to local media. Eyewitnesses said Golden was climbing a rock structure with two friends when he stepped on something that blew up.
While the cause of the blast remains unclear, the man has been hospitalised and part of Central Park has been shut down.
The police and paramedics rushed to the scene after a call came in at 10:53 am local time. The NYPD bomb squad was also dispatched. The victim suffered a severe leg injury and faced “a possible amputation,” said a Fire Department of New York spokesperson.
