The Nobel Prize 2018 in Chemistry has been awarded to scientists Frances H Arnold , George P Smith and Sir Gregory P Winter for their work in directed evolution of enzymes and the phage display of peptides and antibodies.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences decided to award the Nobel Prize with one half to Frances H Arnold and the other half jointly to George P Smith and Sir Gregory P Winter.
This year’s Chemistry Laureates have taken control of evolution and used the same principles – genetic change and selection – to develop proteins that solve humankind's chemical problems, according to the Nobel prize Twitter handle.
Sir Gregory Winter used phage display to produce new pharmaceuticals. George Smith developed a method known as phage display, where a bacteriophage – a virus that infects bacteria – can be used to evolve new proteins.
Frances Arnold, the third laureate was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize, as he conducted the first directed evolution of enzymes, which are proteins that catalyse chemical reactions.
