The Iraqi Military has claimed that Islamic State No. 2 leader was killed in a coalition airstrike with the US forces.
Afri, also known as Abdul Rahman Mustafa Mohamed was in a mosque in Northern Iraq’s Tal Afar city when it was struck down during the air strike.
According to a CNN report, a senior ISIS security figure named Akram Qirbash, also known as the “Judge of Judges,”, who was present with Afri in the mosque was also killed. A senior Iraqi security official who did not want to be named discussing sensitive intelligence told CNN the strike happened Tuesday.
The Pentagon Unsure
Meanwhile the Pentagon has refused to corroborate the claim. The US Defense Department spokesman Col Steve Warren said that the United States cannot independently confirm that high-value ISIS targets were killed in Iraq.
ISIS Quiet
ISIS has not made any comment.
This happens two months after the ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was severely injured during another air strike in March.
The Guardian reported on May 1 that Baghdadi had a serious spinal injury and he would never again be able to lead the terrorist group.
