The fate of Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s mansion in Mumbai has caused fierce debate, after a Maharashtra MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha had demanded that the Jinnah House be pulled down and a cultural centre be constructed in its place.

Former Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan weighed in on the issue, saying that history couldn’t be written off by demolishing buildings.

Khan currently leads the Pakistan Movement of Justice, commonly known as ‘PTI’, and serves as a member of the National Assembly.

Pakistan had expressed concern over the safety of Jinnah House located in Mumbai, and said India should show respect towards it, days after Lodha’s demand.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria

He expressed concern over the safety of Jinnah House, the residence of Pakistan's founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah in south Mumbai, after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha, last week, demanded that the building be demolished and a cultural centre be built in its place.

Jinnah had supervised the making of the house, in a two and half acres property, in Mumbai’s Malabar Hill. In 1948, the Jinnah house was let out to the British High Commission as the residence cum office of the deputy high commissioner.
