Hours after the US military struck Iran’s nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday, 22 June, and urged immediate de-escalation of tensions.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said he had a detailed discussion with the President of Iran and added that he “expressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for the early restoration of regional peace, security and stability.”

US Attacks Iran

Early on Sunday, 22 June, US warplanes targeted three of Iran’s nuclear sites — Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow — where a uranium enrichment plant is reportedly buried nearly 80 metres beneath a mountain.

The strikes come amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and are part of a broader chain of events that began with Israel’s attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and other targets on 13 June 2025, which it claimed were ‘preventive’ strikes.

Both Israel’s attack on Iran and the subsequent US strikes unfolded even as Washington and Tehran were engaged in negotiations on a nuclear deal aimed at preventing Iran from developing weapons-grade uranium.

On Sunday morning, US President Donald Trump confirmed the US military action in a post on X.

Iran has issued a warning of reprisals in response to the US attack, calling it “outrageous” and warning it will have “everlasting consequences.”
