With the Bandra-Worli Sea Link on the horizon, close to a hundred volunteers joined Dia Mirza to spend time removing plastic from the sand. In our live interaction, Dia spoke about the importance and significance of this day saying, “Earth Day is a reminder that we are the citizens of this planet and that this is our home. It is a reminder that we should protect our home for the sake of our health and our well-being.”

The theme for this year’s World Earth day was to bolster the efforts and spread awareness on plastic pollution and how it is affecting the planet.

If we truly care for the environment we must become committed in protecting our environment and our health. Nature provides our health and I always say celebrate Earth Day like it’s your birthday. Remember, this is the only day that is a reminder that we cut across geographies, culture, caste and separate one human being from another and are united by our identity that we are all citizens of this planet.

She also spoke about the plastic ban.

Let’s make a start every time that we go to the restaurant by telling the server ‘straw nahi chahiye’. Think about it, we use it just for a second, but a single item of plastic like that remains in the environment for up to 500 years! So, let’s decrease plastic consumption starting now.
