Chinese Firefighter Injured in Tianjin Blast Wakes 40 Days Later

Zhang Chaofang, 19, a Chinese firefighter, woke up after 40 days in coma. He had been seriously injured in the Tianjin port explosion that killed 173 people on August 13, 2015.

According to Dr Gao Hongmei of the Tianjin First Center Hospital, Chaofang received extensive burns, traumatic brain injuries, respiratory failure, as well as kidney and liver damage.

Chaofang has had four skin graft operations and all the grafted skin has survived, Gao said.

On September 17, Chaofang’s condition had showed significant improvement.

The twin blasts killed over 170 people, including 104 firemen, 11 police officers and 55 civilians and injured over 700. Many of the injured are still undergoing treatment.

Families of the deceased firemen were given compensation of 2.3 yuan ($360,000) each.
