After floods wreaked havoc in every district of Punjab, social media users shared posts with an image and text claiming that former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh donated 600 tractors to help flood-affected farmers in the state.
How do we know?: We ran a keyword search to confirm whether Singh had donated tractors to Punjab's farmers, but did not find any credible report confirming this.
However, we came across a post on his verified Instagram account, where he addressed the flood situation and assured people that they were "not alone."
It did not make any mention of specific donations or support for farmers.
We then looked for details about his foundation, called 'YouWeCan', and found that it specialises in health-related issues such as cancer and COVID-19.
Their website did not mention anything about flood relief work in Punjab.
Where's the image from?: When we ran a reverse image search on the image to find its source, we noticed that it had not been shared by any reliable source.
Taking a closer look at the image, we noticed several errors.
The banner in the image carried multiple typos such as 'Yuvaj' instead if 'Yuvraj', 'Punab' and 'Punjab' being mentioned in succession, and 'Affacted' instead of 'Affected'.
The faces of the people in the image were also distorted.
Since these errors are tell-tale signs of Artificial Intelligence, we submitted it to AI image detection websites such as Hive Moderation and SightEngine.
Hive Moderation was 99.9 percent sure that the image in question was made using AI.
Similarly, SightEngine, too, showed a 99 percent confidence score of the image being made with AI.
Conclusion: An AI-generated image has gone viral with the false claim that Yuvraj Singh donated 600 tractors to farmers affected by the recent floods in Punjab.
