A video showing a man and a woman, surrounded by a small crowd, being flogged by a man, is being shared on social media.
The claim: The X (formerly Twitter) account of the Brahmanbaria unit of the Awami League in Bangladesh also shared the clip, with the text, "This is the name of new Bangladesh! This is the so-called 2nd freedom! A militant regime is now running in Bangladesh under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus."
(Archived versions of more claims on social media can be seen here and here.)
Is it true?: No, neither is the clip recent, nor is it from Bangladesh.
It dates back to June 2024 and shows visuals from West Bengal's Chopra.
In the clip, one can se Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker Tajmul Islam caning a couple who were allegedly having "illicit" relations.
How did we find out the truth?: We ran a reverse image search on the video using Google Lens.
The results pointed us towards several news reports, including one by Hindi news organisation Amar Ujala, which was published on 1 July 2024 and mentioned that it showed a "horrific video" from West Bengal.
It added that the incident took place in Chopra, an area in West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district and showed a TMC worker flogging a couple.
Another report by NDTV which carried visuals from the video identified the assailant as one Tajmul Islam, a local TMC worker in Chopra, who was arrested on 30 June.
As per the report, the couple were reportedly engaged in an "illicit relationship" and were flogged on orders of a kangaroo court, the police said.
We also came across several social media posts by journalists which showed Islam's arrest.
Conclusion: An old video from West Bengal is being shared to falsely claim that it shows visuals from Bangladesh.
