Video of Woman Beaten in Pak Shared as Atrocity Against Hindus
A video showing a group of men assaulting a woman and throwing her on the ground is viral on social media. The claim along with the video mentions that the incident is from Pakistan and the woman was beaten up because she is a Hindu.
The video shared by a Facebook user Gaurav Sharma had over a million views at the time of publishing this article.
The claim reads: “This is how women are being treated in Pakistan. इस लड़की का गुनाह सिर्फ इतना है की ये हिन्दू है और वो भी शान्तिधूर्तो के देश पाकिस्तान में।” (Translated: This girl’s only fault is that she is a Hindu in a country like Pakistan)
TRUE OR FALSE?
The claim along with the video is misleading. The incident did happen in Pakistan but the woman seen in the video is not a Hindu.
Her name is Amrat Shahzadi and the incident dates back to 29 October when a fight happened between a group of lawyers and the woman outside a local court in Shakargarh.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
A google keyword search led us to an article published by Gulf News on 31 October with the headline, “Video of lawyers in Pakistan kicking woman outside court goes viral.”
The article shows the same video which is doing the round on social media.
As per the article, the incident took place outside a local court in Pakistan’s Shakargarh when a fight happened between a group of lawyers and the woman seen in the video. The woman, identified as Amrat, who had gone to the court for a hearing, claimed that the lawyers misbehaved with her, while the lawyers alleged that Amrat attacked them.
“The Local Bar Association’s President, Naeem Iqbal, alleged that Amrat attempted to abduct Yasir Khan, who is one of the accused lawyers,” the report added.
We also found a tweet shared by BBC Urdu journalist Tahir Imran Mian on 1 November, which had the picture of the lawyer seen in the video and a copy of FIR registered in the case.
The FIR was registered on 29 October and mentions Amrat Shahzadi as the victim and the person who has filed the FIR, is identified as Samar Jamal, Amrat counsin (highlighted in red).
While it’s true that the incident did happen in Pakistan, the woman seen in the video has been wrongly given a Hindu identity.
