(Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.)
Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.
The video is from Kathmandu, Nepal, during a clash between police and National Liberation Movement members which took place in April 2024.
It is not linked to the Bodh Gaya protests which began this year.
What we found: At first, we divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.
We came across an article by Kathmandu Today from April 2024. It carried a similar frame like the viral video.
The article reported that the police in Kathmandu used batons and sticks to attack two Buddhist monks who were walking on the street.
This incident occurred during a protest organised by the National Revolution Campaign led by Rajendra Mahato.
Later, the police initiated an investigation into the matter, stating that action will be taken against the responsible individuals if they are found guilty.
Similarly, we found a video on YouTube by Sagarmatha TV with similar frames reporting on the incident.
The Print also reported on the protests in Nepal in April 2024. It stated that the march turned violent when the participants pushed down the barricade set by the police to prevent them from entering the restricted area.
In the clash, six people were injured, including two police personnel, leaving one police officer in critical condition. The police also arrested four people for inciting violence.
What is happening in Bodh Gaya?: The Quint reported about the ongoing protest by Buddhist monks in Bodh Gaya, demanding the removal of Brahmins and non-Buddhists from the control of the Mahabodhi Temple.
The protesters alleged that the Mahabodhi Temple was being "Brahminised" and that Hindu rituals and practices were being imposed on the temple, which they consider a violation of their religious and cultural identity.
The protesters want the Bodh Gaya Temple Act 1949 to be abolished and the management of the temple to be handed over entirely to Buddhists.
The Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) has responded to the allegations, stating that the committee currently has a majority of Buddhist members and that the claims of "Brahminisation" are false.
Conclusion: A video from Nepal showing police beating a monk has been falsely linked to the ongoing protests in Bodh Gaya.
