Video of Mob Thrashing Man in Meerut Shared as Delhi Incident
(Editor’s Note: This story was first published on 28 August 2019 and is being republished from The Quint’s archive in the light of the video resurfacing on social media with a claim that it shows a Muslim man being thrashed for not chanting Jai Shri Ram.)
A day after a man was brutally beaten to death at Old Delhi Railway Station, the official account of Delhi Youth Congress, and journalist Samir Abbas on 28 August, tweeted an alleged video of the incident.
The video shows a man in white kurta being thrashed by the mob around him in broad daylight.
Abbas, who also tagged Delhi Police in the tweet, took it down hours after posting it.
It had nearly 300 retweets before it was taken down.
You can find the archived version of the tweet here.
A man, identified as Mohammad Qari Owais, was brutally beaten to death after a fight broke out between him and shopkeepers over a set of headphones outside the exit gate of Old Delhi Railway Station.
WHAT IS THE TRUTH?
The video is of an incident from Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut this year and not from Delhi. A man was thrashed in August for allegedly molesting a girl.
WHAT WE FOUND
The Old Delhi incident took place on the night of 26 August and the video in question was taken during the day.
Few users in the comment section on the video suggested that the incident is from Meerut and not Delhi.
On further conducting a Google reverse image search with keywords “man” “thrashed” and “Meerut”, we found that the video was actually from Meerut and the incident happened in August.
The Times of India carried an ANI report along with visuals confirming the same. According to the report, a man was brutally thrashed after he allegedly molested a girl in a moving bus.
