CLAIM
A video clip was posted on Facebook by a user named Sachin Kumar on 1 October with the claim that the video is a rare original of Swami Vivekananda’s speech, delivered in Chicago on 13 September 1893.
The claim along with the video reads, “दुर्लभ_ओरिजनल_वीडियो शायद कितने ही भाई होंगे जिन्होंने आजतक हिदू ह्रदय सम्राट श्री स्वामी विवेकानंद जी को देखा भी नही होगा जिन्होंने डूबते हुए सनातन धर्म को बचाया उन्हीश्री स्वामी विवेकानंद जी का ये एक दुर्लभ वीडियो लाया हूँ स्वामी विवेकानन्द ने अमेरिका के शिकागो में 13 सितम्बर 1893 को दिया व्याख्यान।जरूर सुने |” (There are many who have not seen Hindu Hriday Samrat Shri Swami Vivekananda, the man who is the saviour of Sanatan Dharma. I bring for them rare video of Swami Vivekananda’s speech in America’s Chicago delivered on 13 September 1893.”)
The video, at the time this article was written, was viewed over three lakh times and shared 13,000 times.
WHAT’S THE TRUTH?
The claim with which the video clip was posted is not true. The clip is actually from a film titled ‘Vivekananda By Vivekananda’.
The film is based on Swami Vivekananda’s biography named Swami Vivekananda on Himself. The book is a collection of Vivekananda’s letters and lectures which was compiled in 1963 by Swami Sambudhdhananda.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
On conducting a reverse search on the video using Yandex search engine, we came across multiple video clips which suggested that the snippet is from a film on Swami Vivekananda.
Taking a cue from here, we searched using key words “Film on Swami Vivekananda”. The Quint found a complete film uploaded on the YouTube by a channel named ‘Sri Ramakrishna Math Chennai’.
At 13:40 minutes, the same speech, which is now viral, can be seen.
We also found in the film certification that the name of the film is ‘Vivekananda By Vivekananda’. The film was produced by Sri Ramakrishna Math and directed by the Karthik Saragur.
