A video is being shared on social media that shows police escorting injured individuals, alleging that it shows Uttar Pradesh police detaining and providing 'treatment' to supporters of Member of Parliament from Nagina, Chandrashekhar Azad, who participated in the clashes in Prayagraj.
What we found: At first, we divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.
We found a post on X by Shankar Bansari Journalist which featured the viral video. It was posted on 5 June.
The post noted, "Sriganganagar Breaking News. Extortion gang caught red-handed, 4 criminals arrested! ₹5 lakh demanded from businessman in the name of gangsters. Police nabbed criminals who arrived in a luxury Fortuner." (sic.)
Additionally, at the end of the video featuring in the X post, we noticed "Raj Cop," written at the back of the car.
We, then, ran a relevant keyword search and found an Instagram post by one SBT News.
It showed a frame in which we spotted a man as seen in the viral video.
It noted that four miscreants Rajkumar alias Rocket, Kuldeep, Shyamsundar and his nephew Neeraj Swami, who were caught in the Sadar police station area while extorting five lakh rupees from a businessman in Sri Ganganagar, were presented in the court.
We checked the social media handles of Sri Ganganagar police and found a post featuring newspaper clippings about the arrest of four men involved in an extortion racket.
What happened in Prayagraj?: Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad was apprehended and put under house arrest while trying to reach Isota village in Karchhana tehsil in Uttar Pradesh.
He was en route to meet the relatives of a man from the Dalit community, Devi Shankar, who was allegedly burnt alive.
Azad’s arrest sparked unrest in Prayagraj, where his followers demanded his release, Business Standard reported.
Conclusion: An unrelated video has gone viral to falsely claim that it shows Azad's supporters arrested by UP police in Prayagraj.
