A text message which talks about the United Nations (UN), Pakistan, and the Pahalgam terror attack has gone viral on social media.

What does it say?: The message claims that the UN passed a resolution condemning the Pahalgam terror attack, which Pakistan was able to modify by getting a clause stating "The terrorists did not kill after asking about religion," inserted.

  • It further states that this was possible due to X (formerly Twitter) posts by Opposition leaders like Siddaramaiah, Akhilesh Yadav, Pawan Khera, and Supriya Shrinate, where they allegedly made the same statement about terrorists and religion.

  • Some versions of the claim also add that China was able to get the resolution modified further to remove a clause stating that "The Muslim terrorists killed after asking about religion."

At the time of writing this report, this post by former IPS officer and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi had gathered over 10 lakh views.

(Archived versions of more posts sharing this viral claim can be seen here, here, here, and here.)

Is it true?: The claim is completely false.

  • The UN has not passed a resolution regarding the Pahalgam terror attack and has only issued a press release condemning it.

  • Moreover, none of the Opposition leaders have shared posts talking about terrorists NOT asking about the religious identity of the people who were killed in the attack.

How did we find out the truth?: We looked up 'UN Pahalgam terror attack' on Google, which led us to a press statement on the UN's website.

  • It read that the members of the UN Security Council "condemned in the strongest terms," the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, expressing "deepest sympathy and condolences" to the families of those who lost their lives.

  • The statement also commented on terrorism, calling it one of the "most serious threats" to international peace.

  • Neither of the two instances of UN press briefings mentioning Pahalgam included any resolution.

  • The UN did not pass any resolution regarding the terrorist attack, so it becomes clear that neither Pakistan nor China inserted any clauses into this alleged resolution as claimed.

What about the X posts by Opposition leaders?: The viral message also claims that Pawan Khera, Siddaramaiah, Akhilesh Yadav, and Supriya Shrinate shared posts stating that the terrorists did not ask about the victims' religious identities.

  • We looked into the leaders' X accounts to see whether they had indeed shared any posts of this kind, but found this part of the claim to be false.

  • While Akhilesh Yadav and Supriya Shrinate did not share any posts of this nature, the closest post we found on Siddaramaiah's account was one where he referred to an earlier statement he made about war.

  • This was in reference to a statement he made to the media about not supporting war between India and Pakistan, as seen in this CNN News 18 report.

  • Moreover, when we looked at Pawan Khera's account, we saw that he had called out the misinformation in Bedi's post, who later issued a clarification.

Conclusion: A viral message falsely claim that Pakistan and China were able to insert clauses about terror and religion in a UN resolution about the Pahalgam terror attack.
