Amid Telangana's Member of Legislative Council (MLC) and leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), Kalvakuntla Kavitha's suspension from the party for "anti-party activities" on 2 September, a clip of a building structure on fire has gone viral on social media.

The claim: Those sharing the video claimed that BRS's workers set the Telangana Bhavan following K Kavitha's suspension from the party.

  • Social media users wrote, "BRS workers set fire to Telangana Bhavan in celebration of Kalvakuntla Kavita's suspension from the party." (sic.)

(Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.)

Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false. This video dates back to 2021 when a minor fire accident broke out at the Telangana Bhavan.

What we found: At first, we ran a relevant keyword search to check whether a fire incident happened at the Telangana Bhavan recently, however, we did not find any such information.

  • We, then, divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image on some of them.

  • It led us to a YouTube video featuring the same viral video by Yoyo TV from 20 March 2021.

  • The video noted that a fire accident happened at the Telangana Bhavan during the MLC election results in 2021.

  • The same video was shared in March 2021 by news outlets such as Siasat Daily and AHN News.

  • We ran another keyword search and found a report by the Times of India dated 20 March 2021.

  • The report mentioned a fire at Telangana Bhavan after party members set off firecrackers to celebrate Surabhi Vani Devi's election victory from the Mahabubnagar-Ranga Reddy-Hyderabad Graduates MLC constituency.

  • It noted the fire department's analysis that the flames ignited when sparks from the crackers landed on the plants on the portico at the main entrance of the building.

Conclusion: Clearly, the video is old and unrelated to K Kavitha's suspension from her party. The viral clip is from 2021 showing a minor fire accident at Telangana Bhavan.
