An image which purportedly shows Swami Vivekananda bowling, while an umpire is seen standing in the background, is going viral on social media platforms as a real visual.

The text with the photo mentions that it was taken in 1884 at the Eden Gardens stadium and shows Vivekananda bowling for Calcutta Town Club.

We received a query about the viral post on our WhatsApp tipline as well. Older versions of such claims could be viewed here and here.

What's the truth?: The image has been altered to add Vivekananda's face. The original one showed Yorkshire cricketer Hedley Verity bowling in a cricket match.

How did we find that out?: A simple Google Lens search directed us to the same visual posted on an X handle called 'Mohandas Menon'.

  • It was posted on 12 July 2017.

  • The post's caption said, "Today in 1932: Left arm spinner Hedley Verity recorded the best bowling figures in fc history: 19.4-16-10-10 for Yorkshire vs Notts at Leeds."

  • The same visual was also available on stock image website, Getty Images. As per the available details, the image was taken in January 1940 and showed a cricketer named Hedley Verity.

Comparing visuals: Team WebQoof compared the viral image to the photo shared on X and found that the former has been edited to add Vivekananda's face.

Conclusion: The image has been altered and does not show a real visual.
