A screenshot of a Gujarati newspaper clipping is going viral online to claim that astronaut Sunita Williams turned to Quran for inspiration when in space.
It further notes that Williams revealed this during an interview with BBC which happened after she returned from space.
It also mentions that she read the entire Quran and thought about the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan when the food and water was running out.
How did we find out the truth?: We checked BBC's official website but did not find any such news.
We also performed a relevant keyword search on Google to find other reports on this matter but did not find any.
Neither did we find anything on NASA's website that would support this claim.
Moreover, we checked Williams' interviews to various media outlets like CBS, New York Times and BBC News while in space, but she did not mention anything about Ramadan or Quran.
In an interview with CNN-News 18 Williams’ cousin, Falguni Pandya, mentioned that Williams took a Ganesha idol with her when she went to space in 2024.
Moreover, after returning from space mission, Expedition 32/33, dated 14 July to 18 November 2012, Williams arrived in Delhi for a press conference in 2013.
Here, she said that she took a Ganesha idol, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Upanishads with her when she went to space in 2012.
Even then, there was no mention of the Quran.
We have reached out to the BBC and the story will be updated when we get a response from the organisation.
Conclusion: A fake BBC report is going viral to claim that Sunita Williams took Quran to space with her.
