A video showing a group of people dragging people out of a bus and assaulting them is being shared on social media, where users are sharing the clip as one from Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.

The claim: It is being shared to claim that it shows an incident where people from the Muslim community attacked a bus ferrying Hindu devotees during a pilgrimage to Uttarakhand's Purnagiri temple.

  • Some posts also claim that the pilgrims had stopped for breakfast and had bhajans (Hindu devotional songs) playing during the violence.

(Archived versions of more posts sharing this claim can be seen here and here.)

But...?: The claim is misleading as the communal angle given to the incident is false.

  • In reality, the video shows the bus' passengers fighting with a local fruit vendor in Sambhal over the price of oranges.

  • Sambhal Police clarified that both parties belong to the Hindu community.

How did we find out the truth?: Using keywords like 'Sambhal bus fight', we looked for more information on the viral video.

  • This led us to a video report by UP Tak published on 22 March, which mentioned that the incident took place along the highway in Sambhal.

  • It added that the fight broke out after devotees, who had stopped to buy fruits, felt that the oranges were too expensive and got into a squabble with the fruit vendor.

  • A report by Aaj Tak added that tensions kept escalating during the verbal altercation, after which the fruit vendor called up locals to thrash the devotees.

  • None of these reports mentioned anything communal in nature.

  • We also came across an X (formerly Twitter) reply by Sambhal Police's official account, which was replying to a similar claim.

  • In their response, the police clarified that both parties involved belong to the Hindu community and that they had '"taken preventive action" against six people in connection to the fight.

Conclusion: A video of a fight between devotees and a fruit vendor in Sambhal has gone viral with the false claim that people from the Muslim community attacked Hindu devotees.
